The EU wants to increase the amount of money that it takes from British taxpayers, the Government does not want a real terms cut in this. An amendment was moved in the debate on EU spending calling for a real terms cut in the European Union budget. The amendment calling for the cut was opposed by the Government, yet in spite of this pressure a major rebellion defeated the Prime Minister.
